Business Insider recently reported that Sony is currently working on integrating Advertisements into video games on their platforms such as Playstation 4 or Playstation 5. According to the report, it would incentivize free to play games to create alternate sources of revenue other than relying on Microtransactions for Skins or Season Passes. Sony still hasn’t decided on whether they should get a portion of the ad revenue. Sony has been also developing software that would allow developers to create in-game ads that would give players the ability to watch ads or promotions to get exclusive in-game rewards such as skins or XP Boosters.
Microsoft is also considering doing a similar thing on their platforms such as Xbox, PC, or perhaps even within Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass already offers Special Promotions for Discord and Disney+.
EA had already come under fire last year after a report suggested that EA were looking at implementing TV Style ads within their games such as FIFA or Need For Speed. This was later debunked and addressed by EA themselves stating: “Following incorrect reports suggesting that we are looking to introduce ‘TV-style’ commercials into our games, we wanted to clarify that in-game advertising for console games is not something we’re currently looking at, or have signed any agreements to implement”.
But what do you think? Should video games have advertisements?
